How Does Polyurethane Flooring Hold Up Against Chemical Spills in Industrial Plants?
Chemical Resistance
Polyurethane flooring is extremely resistant to a broad spectrum of chemicals, such as:
- Acids and alkalis
- Solvents
- Oils and greases
- Cleaning agents and detergents
- Inorganic and organic chemicals
It is thus ideal for:
- Chemical processing plants
- Food and beverage factories
- Pharmaceutical manufacturing
- Laboratories
Note: Special chemical resistance will depend on the formulation and thickness of the polyurethane system employed.
Comparison to Epoxy
Polyurethane vs. Epoxy Flooring
- Polyurethane tends to perform better under chemical attack, particularly from organic acids, which can eventually destroy epoxy.
- Epoxy is more brittle and crack-susceptible to thermal or mechanical stress, through which channels for chemicals to penetrate can form.
- Polyurethane is more flexible and thus resists cracking and delamination despite heavy thermal or mechanical loading.
Thermal Shock & Spill Resistance
- Polyurethane floor coverings withstand thermal shock (i.e., scalding fluid spills) much better than epoxy.
- Its own integrity even when it is spilled, hot, corrosive liquids is its greatest advantage in factory environments.
Ease of Cleaning and Decontamination
- The slippery, non-absorbing surface of polyurethane floors stops chemicals from being absorbed and allows easy cleanup.
- Spills may be wiped off without residue or long-term damage if handled immediately.
Considerations
- Not all polyurethane floors are equal to. For very aggressive chemicals, apply a specially formulated chemical-resistant formula.
- Always refer to the manufacturer’s chemical resistance chart to confirm your substance of interest is compatible with your plant applications.
- Curing time and correct installation are the determining factors in obtaining optimal chemical resistance.
Ideal Environments for Polyurethane Flooring
- Battery charging stations (acid resistance)
- Food manufacturing (organic acid, fat, and cleaning chemical resistance)
- Pharmaceutical labs (disinfectant and solvent resistance)
- Warehouses and distribution centers (oil and chemical spill protection)
Bottom Line
Polyurethane floors are among the most suitable for areas where there are frequent chemical spills. It provides:
- Excellent chemical and thermal resistance
- Extremely high life expectancy
- Smooth, sanitary finish
- Mechanical wear and impact resistance
